Protecting Indonesia’s Birds From The Cruel Wildlife Trade

Change For Animals Foundation is proud to Support “FLIGHT” – an organisation founded in February 2018 based on a commitment to protect Indonesia’s birds from the cruel wildlife trade.

Hundreds of thousands of birds are trapped and stolen from the wild every day throughout Indonesia to be supply the demand for song birds.

All these birds suffer immeasurably and most die prematurely. Their wings are often broken by the glue and in the nets used to trap them. They are crushed because they are locked in very small cages before being sent to the markets. Most of them die before they are even sold.

This trade is decimating wild populations and causing immeasurable suffering to thousands of individual animals every day… and banishing them to a life in a cage…

Rescuing and Rehabilitating Those We Can Until the Trade Ends

Since the creation of local charity FLIGHT in February 2018, Change For Animals Foundation has been supporting their campaigns to raise vital public & political awareness of the cruelty and dangers of the trade, as well as rescuing and rehabilitating birds intercepted from the trade. Since February last year, more than 10,000 birds from the illegal and cruel bird trade have been rescued and released back into the wild!

Together, alongside Animals Asia, we are committed to:

  • Gathering evidence of the cruel capture of – and trade in – birds from their homes in the forest to filthy markets throughout Indonesia

  • Investigating and reporting the illegal poachers to authorities

  • Lobbying the government to take urgent action to safeguard birds in the wild

Solution-based approach!

We are committed to supporting FLIGHT’s plans to develop ecotourism by employing former bird poachers as guides for birdwatchers as part of our commitment to educating them and local communities on keeping birds free in the wild where they belong, and to protect the forests’ biodiversity and ecosystems for which they are crucial!

“Caged birds accept each other, but flight is what they long for. The caged bird sings with a fearful trill, of things unknown, but longed for still, and his tune is heard on the distant hill, for the caged bird sings of freedom”

Update

Wildlife Belongs in the Wild!

In June, thanks to supporters like you, Change For Animals Foundation, was able to support the Wallacea Nature Conservation and our friends at Jakarta Animal Aid Network (JAAN), to provide assistance for the emergency care of illegally caught wildlife that had been intercepted by the authorities in Maluccu (Indonesia), destined for the Philippines to supply the cruel and illegal wildlife markets.

Macaques, cockatoos, parrots and terrapins were all in desperate need of help and we are proud to be able to support those on the ground by providing funds for their veterinary care, transport back to the Bacan islands where the animals had been stolen from, building of quarantine cages and the surveillance of release sites so they can be rehabilitated and returned to the wild where they belong once the quarantine period has been completed!

The wildlife trade causes the immeasurable suffering of countless animals each year and decimates wild populations.

300 Birds Saved from Cruel Pet Trade!

On Friday 28th September, our partner group FLIGHT assisted Bakaheuni Quarantine in the confiscation of 300 live birds, illegally stolen from the wild to supply the cruel pet trade, that decimates wild populations and causes immeasurable suffering. The birds were released the following day back into the wild, saved from a life of misery in a cage.

On the 24th November 2018, FLIGHT assisted the quarantine authorities with the seizure of 1,536 birds about to be illegally smuggled from Bakaheuni port.

These are the lucky ones, with hundreds of thousands of birds being trapped and stolen from the wild every day throughout Indonesia. These birds have now been released back into the wild where they belong!

Please take action today!

  • Please sign and share the petition calling on the President of Indonesia  to ban the cruel trade in birds stolen from the wild, and to take strong action to shut down the illegal bird markets
